Tim is the woodworker. Begun almost 20 years ago by necessity. Wooden things get broken, scratched, and need to be fixed. Customers ask for small changes to be made, some not so small. That requires tools and skill. Tools you can buy, skill you need to learn, and the Balinese artisans smile all the time while they’re teaching you. They are patient, and they care. Over the course of years, probably 400 hours of schooling to pass that skill on. The Indonesian woodworkers do everything the old fashion way—hammer and chisel, hand saws and hand sanding, joinery using hand planers and the eye, and finishing using hand made shellac instead of polyurethane. They use teak as their primary wood type. But also lychee, tamarind, merbao, jack fruit, and ebony. Wonderful hardwoods with a beautiful texture, and great to work with. The mortises cut clean and sharp, the patina has a hue not seen here, and they sand smooth as glass. Feel these woods and the touch is soft. Most of these items are also on the website, and most will be at these shows. All of the furniture is designed to be broken down. That makes it easy for you to take home.
Jeanie’s love affair with pottery first started 18 years ago on Lomboc Island in Indonesia where we saw Indonesian women creating beautiful bowls, plates, and cups on kick wheels, and then fired with coconut shells in a wood fired kiln. The idea was simple designs, creatively glazed, to fit in every home. That was the idea, but to get there the result has evolved. First was professional teaching in the classroom, then one on one teaching by other potters, then experimentation, and finally honing the idea to “getting it right”. And many classes first from John C Campbell in North Carolina, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee, LaMeridian International School of Ceramics in Tuscany.
